The Design Communication Association (USA) along with the Department of Design & Environmental Analysis at Cornell University will be hosting the 2018 Design Communication Association Conference in Ithaca, New York from October 07 - 10, 2018.

The venue is at one of the most beautiful college campuses in the US at Cornell University’s main campus in Ithaca New York. The campus features 4,800-acre with noteworthy architecture including the I.M. Pei-designed Johnson Museum of Art, Milstein Hall by Rem Koolhass, Weill-Hall by Richard Meier, Bill and Melinda Gates Hall by Morphosis group.

Keynotes for the conference include internationally acclaimed individuals who had contributed to current trends of design thinking and its representation.

We are happy to announce that Professor James Wines of SITE, David Lewis of LTL Architects, and Jenny Sabin of Sabin Design Lab are our three keynote speakers.

[James Wines, winner of the Smithsonian Institution’s 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, is an architectural designer, visual artist, and writer. He is also A professor of architecture at Penn State University, with a teaching emphasis on Integrative arts. He  is the founder (in1970) of SITE, New York –a multidisciplinary practice that includes buildings, public spaces, master plans, landscapes, environmental art works, interiors, exhibition designs, video productions, graphics, and product designs.] Additional information on James Wines and SITE can be found at this link: http://www.siteenvirodesign.com

[David J. Lewis is Associate Professor of Architecture and a founding principal of Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL Architects), a design intensive architecture firm located in New York City. LTL Architects is the recipient of the 2007 National Design Award for Interior Design from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and was selected as one of six American architectural firms featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale. David Lewis has also taught at Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, University of Limerick, and Ohio State University.] Additional information on LTL can be found at this link: http://ltlarchitects.com/

[Jenny Sabin specializes in adaptive architecture, bio-inspired design, material computation, programmable matter, sustainability, responsive materials, digital ceramics, biomimicry, and Kirigami geometry. Jenny Sabin's work is at the forefront of a new direction for 21st-century architectural practice; one that investigates the intersections of architecture and science, and applies insights and theories from biology and mathematics to the design of material structures. Sabin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Cornell University. She is principal of Jenny Sabin Studio, an experimental architectural design studio based in Philadelphia, and director of the Sabin Design Lab at Cornell AAP, a hybrid research and design unit with specialization in computational design, data visualization, and digital fabrication.]

In addition, distinguished educator and prolific author of architecture books Professor Francis D. K. Ching will be participating in the conference and offering a workshop on drawing.

The theme
of the 2018 conference is “Virtual+Actual: Process and Product of Design”. The theme reflects recent emergence and inclusion of various digital, virtual, and manual tangents in both educational environment and professional practice that influences the way we link between process and product of design. The DCA 2018 conference theme looks at current thoughts and relationships between virtual and actual in the process and product of design execution. Abstracts are double-blind reviewed by the international panel of DCA Reviewers who will recommend acceptance for presentation at the DCA 2018 Conference at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA.

Papers and presentations that include but not limited to approaches and applications of current trends of design and its interrelationships between virtual and actual with allied disciplines are invited to foster and contribute to the discussion of the conference theme. These allied disciplines include architecture, digital media, environment, interior, landscape, media arts, urbanism, housing, etc. All submissions are expected to be original and have not been published previously at other scholarly venues. Specific topics may address following subjects.

Communication & design education, Strategies & design teaching, Sustainability & built environment, Investigation & representation, Interactive environments & applications, Education & practice, Analysis & interpretation, Heritage & architecture, Analog & digital convergence, 3D & visualization, Parametric modeling & fabrication, Urban issues & built environment, Technology and environment, Moving images & time-based media, Design & societal context, Changing dynamics & challenges, Design issues & developing nations.

Submission Process
The process is a two stage submission, first summarized abstract, and then a full paper. The abstracts will be blind reviewed by an international panel of reviewers. Accepted abstracts then will be submitted in full papers. All accepted papers and posters will be published in the conference proceedings (printed book) with ISBN number.
